The Ramayana was published inafter five years of work. Narayan's age shows in this work as he appears to skip narrative details that he would have included if this were written earlier in his career. Although Velan now knows that he is not truly a holy man, he still believes that Raju can save them from the drought. He never remarried in his life; he was also concerned for their daughter Hema, who was only three years old.

He was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's parliament. He takes for granted that the transformability of both culture and the self are key to a heterogenous, paradoxical whole composed of differences and continuities—in nationhood and identity. His father is the Deputy Police Superintendent of Malgudi. Happiness can only be restored by conforming to traditional views, is well illustrated in the novel. His imprisonment absolves him of his past and now he takes a new journey that leads him to salvation.

However, while it displays his characteristic comedy and narrative, the book was reviewed as lacking in depth. His first visit to the country was on a fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundationand he lectured at various universities including Michigan State University and the University of California, Berkeley. With his success, both within India and abroad, Narayan started writing columns for magazines and newspapers including The Hindu and The Atlantic. Before he commences his fast he tells Velan his life story.
